Beautiful group in Carrara marble carved from a single block, representing Hercules Farnese, from the 1st quarter of the 19th century.
So called in reference to the Farnese collection, created during the Renaissance by Cardinal Alexander Farnese, at the Farnese Palace in Caprarola. He collected works of art by the greatest artists of the time.

The original of this statue is the work of the Greek sculptor and bronzier Lysippus dating from the end of the 4th century BC. JC.
Glykon, a Greek sculptor from the beginning of the 3rd century, executed a marble copy measuring just over 3 meters, for the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. It was discovered there in 1546 and joined the Farnese collection to then be moved to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in the 18th century.
The bronze original by Lysippus was unfortunately melted down by the Crusaders during the Siege of Constantinople (1204).
The sculpture of the hero is one of the most famous of Classical Antiquity and forged the image of Hercules in European references.

We discover a tired Hercules, leaning on his mass, discovering under his left shoulder, the skin of the Nemean lion, 1st of the twelve labors of the hero.
On his back, in the hollow of his right hand, the apples from the garden of the Hesperides, eleventh of the labors of Hercules.

Very fine sculpture, very good quality marble.

Very good condition, some light chips on the base, small lack on the left rear corner, not cleaned (the hand holding the apples is completely clogged ).

Period early 19th century.
